Since this winter has been so dry and windy, we still want to be keeping our plants watered. Even in winter, watering is important while the ground is not frozen. When the soil is unfrozen, plant roots are still able to absorb moisture. This is especially helpful during dry Montana winters with little snow cover. 💦Why watering now matters:🌲Evergreens (pine, spruce, juniper) lose moisture year-round and are most at risk for winter burn. 🌳Trees & shrubs benefit from adequate soil moisture going into late winter. 🌵Dry soil can lead to root stress and damage before spring growth begins. 🎯How to water safely in the winter:❄️Water only when temperatures are above freezing and the soil is thawed. ⬇️Apply water slowly and deeply to soak the root zone (about 12” down). ↔️Focus water on the area under the outer edge of the branches (the drip line), as this is where most of the roots are. 🥶Water earlier in the day so excess moisture doesn’t freeze overnight. ‼️Focus on your newly planted trees and shrubs (up to 5yrs old) as their roots are not as fully established as older plants and may need more water. 💧Give enough water to fully saturate the roots. Some resources suggest 10 gallons per inch of trunk diameter. 👍🏻Staying ahead of winter watering now can make a big difference in how your landscape looks this spring! If you’re unsure about what or how much needs water, let us know—we’re always happy to help!#winterwatering #plantwatering #montanawinter #fordenursery #greatfallsmontana ... See MoreSee Less
